Parenting Counselling & Support

Parent counselling and support in Black Rock, Bayside Melbourne. A space for parents and caregivers to feel heard, supported and understood.

Parenting can bring a wide range of emotions, challenges and changes, and at times parents may need support for their own wellbeing, rather than advice about how to manage their child's behaviour. Parenting Counselling & Support is a therapeutic service for parents who may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood, uncertain about becoming a parent, struggling with the demands of parenting, or finding that their own experiences, thoughts or emotions are affecting how they feel in their parenting role.

These sessions focus on the parent as the client. Therapy may explore emotions, beliefs, expectations, patterns of thinking and behaviour, relationships, identity and past experiences that may be influencing the parent's current wellbeing. Depending on individual needs, therapy may draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

How this differs from parent sessions

This service is separate from the parent consultations that form part of a child's therapy at North Star. When a child is attending therapy, parents are routinely involved through feedback, review and support sessions. Parenting Counselling & Support is instead individual therapy for the parent and is offered when North Star is not also providing therapy to their child.

Supporting children. Strengthening families. Helping young people find their own North Star.
