Child Centred Play Therapy (CCPT)

Play is a child's most natural way of understanding themselves and the world around them.

North Star Child Therapy provides child-centred play therapy for children in Black Rock, Bayside Melbourne. Play therapy offers children a developmentally appropriate way to express feelings, explore experiences and work through emotional and behavioural challenges through their natural language of play.

Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT) is an evidence-informed and developmentally appropriate therapeutic approach for children aged 3 to 9. It is based on the humanistic, person-centred principles of Carl Rogers and the work of Virginia Axline, who adapted these principles specifically for children through play therapy.

CCPT is a non-directive approach, meaning the child leads the play and therapeutic process within a carefully designed and supportive playroom environment. Rather than focusing solely on the child's behaviours or difficulties, the therapist focuses on the whole child and the development of a safe, trusting, and accepting therapeutic relationship.

At North Star, CCPT is grounded in the belief that children have an innate capacity for growth, healing, and self-direction when provided with safety, connection, acceptance, and the opportunity to express themselves freely through play. Through the therapeutic relationship, children are supported to explore emotions, experiences, relationships, and challenges in ways that are natural and meaningful for them.
