Trauma Therapy for Children & Teenagers

Helping children, young people and their caregivers move towards healing, safety and confidence.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

North Star Child Therapy provides trauma-focused therapy for children and teenagers in Bayside Melbourne. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to support children and young people who have experienced traumatic events.

TF-CBT was developed by Dr Judith Cohen, Dr Anthony Mannarino, and Dr Esther Deblinger, and is widely recognised as a first-line treatment for childhood trauma and PTSD.

TF-CBT can support children and young people who have had traumatic experiences and are experiencing ongoing trauma symptoms, such as anxiety, intrusive memories or nightmares, avoidance, emotional dysregulation, hypervigilance, sleep difficulties, or changes in mood and behaviour.

The kinds of experiences TF-CBT can help with

Every family's story is different. If you are unsure whether this is the right support, you are welcome to get in touch and talk it through.

  • Sexual abuse or assault
  • Physical abuse or violence
  • Family violence
  • Accidents, injuries or medical experiences
  • Bullying or peer victimisation
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Being a victim of crime
  • Neglect or ongoing adverse experiences
  • Other frightening or distressing experiences that continue to affect a child or young person

TF-CBT aims to help children and families:

  • Reduce trauma symptoms, anxiety, and emotional distress
  • Develop emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Build a sense of safety and resilience
  • Process and make sense of traumatic experiences
  • Strengthen parent-child relationships and communication
  • Support parents to respond confidently and supportively to trauma-related behaviours and emotions

TF-CBT is typically a structured and goal-focused intervention, often delivered over approximately 8 to 16 sessions, with longer-term support available for children who have experienced complex or developmental trauma.
